When I first started this site, I wasn't sure if I was going to add McQueen's movie quotes to my "Quotes" page, or just his real life quotes from interviews. I had come across a website on Tom Horn, which had one of his sayings on it's welcome page. It was, "I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth."
Since it sounded like something Steve McQueen would say, I typed it onto my Quotes page thinking that McQueen had to have used it in his movie "Tom Horn." (he didn't)
Later on I decided that I would only have personal quotes on this particular page, so I removed the movie lines from the Quotes page. But I forgot to remove one particular line, which wasn't even from one of McQueen's movies.
Well, many years later I was reading Christopher Sandford's book, McQueen: the Biography. One of the lines in his book read, "and McQueen told shocked reporters, I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth."
Immediately I knew this was taken from my site, and that there were no shocked reporters since McQueen never said it! (Lesson learned: don't believe everything you read)
As time went on I noticed that this quote appeared in other stories about McQueen. (do a Google search for "I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth." ) The list of people who think McQueen said this was astounding. I had no idea so many people had picked up this line from my website. It's a great line, but McQueen never said it.
Of course this was due to the mistake on my site. I decided to leave the line up and tell the story behind it so that it's real origin can be known.
Don't worry, though, the other Quotes on the page did come from Steve McQueen, and they're better than anything Tom Horn ever came up with!
